The 11% response rate is quite low. Of the 241 people on our list, there were only 27 responses. The low response rate was a shame but was expected. After all, this is only meant to be a fun exercise. However, it does mean that it is difficult to draw any dependable conclusions.

Comparison to DistroWatch.com

To determine if our sample is at least somewhat representative of the linux community, responses of Linux distribution use was compared to DistroWatch.com (June 2006 popularity numbers used). Below are some interesting results:

Distro ELUG (all uses) DistroWatch.com
Ubuntu 18% 29%
SUSE 3% 20%
Gentoo 18% 7%
Debian 10% 8%
Fedora / Redhat 13% 15%
Mandriva / Mandrake 8% 11%
Slackware 7% 6%
ipcop 2% 1%

The only real difference is between SUSE and Gentoo.
